The holiday season is a time for joy, laughter, and creating cherished memories with loved ones. As a mom, you may find yourself taking on the role of the holiday host (whether or not you signed up for it).
While hosting can be a fun experience, it often comes with its fair share of stress. Fear not! This guide is here to help you navigate the holiday hosting journey with ease and grace.
Plan Ahead
Start planning your holiday festivities well in advance. Try finish your present shopping by the end of November to give yourself time to focus on other things.
Create a detailed checklist that includes everything from menu planning and decorations to guest accommodations. The earlier you start, the more smoothly things will run. You can also slowly start to tackle tasks by spreading them out.

Delegate Tasks
You don’t have to do it all alone! I know it’s hard to ask for help but trust me on this one mama.
Enlist the help of family members and friends. Delegate specific tasks, such as setting the table, preparing appetizers, or handling the music playlist.
Sharing the workload ensures that everyone can contribute to the celebration.
Create a Realistic Menu
While a grand feast may be tempting, consider a menu that balances deliciousness with practicality. Don’t overdo and try making tons of dishes you are not familiar with.
Opt for dishes that can be prepared in advance, allowing you to spend more time with your guests and less time in the kitchen. This quick and easy appetizer has been a hit in my holiday hosting arsenal:
Cranberry Brie Bites
Ingredients:
- 1 sheet of puff pastry, thawed
- 1/2 cup cranberry sauce
- 1 wheel of Brie cheese, cut into small cubes
- Fresh rosemary for garnish (optional)
Instructions:
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Roll out the puff pastry sheet on a lightly floured surface.
- Using a round cookie cutter or a glass, cut the puff pastry into small circles.
- Place the puff pastry circles into a mini muffin tin, pressing them gently to take the shape of the tin.
- Add a small spoonful of cranberry sauce into each puff pastry cup.
- Top the cranberry sauce with a cube of Brie cheese.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 10-12 minutes or until the puff pastry is golden and the Brie is melted.
- Remove from the oven and let them cool for a few minutes.
- Garnish with fresh rosemary if desired.
Embrace Potluck Style
Encourage guests to bring a dish to share. This might be the best piece of advice I can give. No, it’s not cheesy to ask guests to bring a dish. Actually most of them love contributing and even showing off their holiday baking skills!
Potluck style not only eases the burden on you but also adds variety to the meal. Coordinate with guests in advance to ensure a diverse and complementary menu.
Set a Festive Ambiance
Transform your home into a winter wonderland without the stress. Opt for simple yet elegant decorations. Consider the power of soft lighting, candles, and a playlist of holiday tunes to create a warm and inviting atmosphere.
Another amazing way to set the scene is embracing the scents of winter. Create a festive ambiance by using seasonal room sprays or essential oils and your guests will automatically be transformed into a winter wonderland.
Create a Relaxation Zone
Designate a cozy corner where guests can unwind (including yourself). Whether it’s a well-stocked hot cocoa station or a comfortable seating area, this retreat space allows everyone to take a breather amidst the festivities.
Embrace Imperfection
Remember that perfection is not the goal. Embrace the imperfections, and be present in the moment.
Remember why you are all together and what you are celebrating. Nobody cares if the dinner rolls are overcooked. Your guests are there to celebrate with you, not to critique your hosting skills.
Prioritize Self-Care
Don’t forget to take care of yourself. And I can’t stress this enough!
Schedule moments of self-care in the days leading up to the event. A well-rested and relaxed host is better equipped to handle the festivities.
Capture the Moments
Lastly, remember to capture the beautiful moments. Whether it’s a candid photo or a quick jot in your journal, preserving these memories will allow you to relive the joy of the holiday season.
With these tips in hand, you’re well on your way to hosting a stress-free and joyful holiday gathering.
Cheers to making this season truly magical for you and your loved ones!
Happy Holiday Hosting!
