Isn’t it funny how before becoming a mom, a shower seems like a basic human need? I had never appreciated showers so much until I became a mom.

A shower, as simple as it sounds, can be one of the only times a mother can have some peace.
I say can be because if you’re like me, most of the time you have one or all of your kids locked in the bathroom with you. One in the bouncer, one with an Ipad, as you race the clock until the baby starts screeching for your boob or the bottle. Your legs haven’t seen a razor in months and you go through dry shampoo just as much as diapers.
Ideally once a week, but sometimes once a month, I schedule a “self-care shower” for myself. It’s normally a time when my husband is home so that I can be sure it will be uninterupted time all to myself.
If you are a single parent ( first of all my gosh, you are amazing), it might need to be scheduled early in the AM or in the PM after the kids go down.
I am a firm believer that a self-care shower is VITAL to a mother’s physical and mental well-being.
So what is a “self-care shower” exactly? Let me break it down to you step by step.
1. Set The Mood
The first step is to turn your shower on to the hottest temperature until the bathroom is super steamy. While you are waiting, get everything else in order. Turn the lights down low.
Light your favorite candle. Invest in an essential oil diffuser and get some relaxing oils. Plop one of my favorite new self-care finds in the shower before you step in, a shower steamer! These BodyRestore Shower Steamers were gifted to me for Christmas, and I’m obsessed.
If you choose to exfoliate before your shower, head to my recent post on all the amazing benefits of dry brushing.
And the last, but most crucial part of setting the mood is the music. I personally listen to 90’s R&B ( come through Jagged Edge), but the choice is yours!
2. Wash The Stress Away
P.S. Don’t forget to turn the hot water down from the first step, forgetting this part could potentially ruin everything, and possibly cause a lawsuit for me (please don’t sue me).
If you have experienced postpartum hair loss and only have three strands of hair left like me, a scalp detox is a must.
On a self-care shower day, I use a scalp scrub in place of shampoo. I have used a couple of different ones, but so far the Hers Detox Scalp Scrub has been my favorite. This step is going to get rid of all of the oil and (and pounds of aforementioned dry shampoo) sitting on your scalp, and give you a soft and refreshed canvas to allow new hair growth.
After the scalp scrub, I will deep condition my hair. I leave my deep conditioner in for the rest of my shower as most deep conditioners will call you to leave them in for at least ten minutes.
During this period, I pull out my most heavy duty razor and shave my entire body until I look like a naked mole rat. Please don’t judge me, I am part Italian and I am saving up for laser hair removal.
Is there anyone else out there who has a holy grail razor? My skin is very senstive and as I mentioned I am Italian so my razor needs to be top notch. The Schick Intuition has been my go-to for the last 20 years, I am not kidding. Pricey yes, but it gets the job done I promise.
Awhhhh… don’t you already feel pounds lighter as you see the tumbleweeds from your legs disappear down the drain? Now it’s time for my favorite part, exfoliation! There is just something about exfoliating that brings me back to life. If you are a coffee lover, Franks Body has amazing coffee scented body scrubs. I also love that this line of products are natural and cruelty free, ensuring that you really are treating yourself the best in this moment.
Lastly, rinse all your worries down the drain. Take a few minutes to remind yourself how blessed you are and the things that you are grateful for. I know things might be tough right now and it may be hard to see a light at the end of the tunnel but it is coming, and you are amazing.
3. Post Shower Routine
If you are going to splurge on one self-care item in this post, please have it be the Keenray Bucket Towel Warmer. You guys, I’m not kidding, this is life changing and is the cherry on top of your self-care shower.
Apply lotion or body oil on your entire body, and put on your silky jammies and your fuzziest socks. Comb through your hair and add a leave-in conditioner. Finally, apply a lip mask and kick your feet up mama.
Relax…
I know sometimes as a mom it is hard for us to ask for what we need. We feel guilt for leaving our children to do something for ourselves, even for thirty minutes. It took me awhile to figure out that when I feel my best, I am an even better mother and wife.
I hope this post gave you the inspiration you needed to start your own self-care shower routine. Let me know in the comments below if you were able to set some time aside for yourself and if you did, how you felt afterwards!
