Motherhood is a journey filled with love and joy, but it’s also a path that can lead to burnout. Mom burnout can be a scary and confusing emotion and can also be compartmentalized as a “normal” feeling to the stresses of motherhood.

Although common, I want you to know that the feelings and emotions that come with mom burnout are not ones that you need to push to the wayside as normal. I also don’t want you to feel alone, and lastly I want you to know there are ways to address it.
The whole reason I chose to write a blog post on this topic is beacuse I experienced mom burnout recently. I wasn’t expecting it at all and it was a very scary, lonely, and frusterating place to be.
In this guide, we’ll explore the signs of mom burnout, delve into the factors contributing to its prevalence, and provide practical strategies for recognizing and addressing mental exhaustion in the journey of motherhood.
Signs of Mom Burnout: Recognizing the Red Flags
Lets unpack the subtle and not-so-subtle signs of burnout first. It is important to identify when and why you may be pushing yourself too hard.
- Physical Exhaustion: Persistent feelings of fatigue and physical exhaustion, even after a full night’s sleep or rest
- Increased Irritability: Heightened irritability and a reduced tolerance for stress, leading to more frequent frustration or short-tempered reactions.
- Neglecting Self-Care: Disregarding self-care practices, such as neglecting personal grooming, healthy eating, or regular exercise.
- Social Withdrawal: Withdrawing from social activities or avoiding interactions with friends and family.
Understanding Mom Burnout Triggers
It is important to try and pinpoint your burnout triggers. Some common triggers of burnout may include societal expectations, to the self-imposed pressure of being a “perfect” mom.
This is a perfect example of a time where getting “unplugged” will do you some good.
P.S. This is your reminder that those “perfect moms” on social media are total B.S.
Breaking the Silence On Mental Health
Speaking out about mental health struggles can be difficult, yet so healing. You may find that once you open up about your struggles, others will feel validated and comfortable confiding in you about theirs.
The more we talk about the struggles of motherhood, including mental health struggles, we create less of a stigma around such topics.
Share how you are feeling with people you trust and seek support without judgment.
Prioritizing Self-Care for Moms
Self-care for moms is critical in preventing and addressing burnout.
There are many practical ways for mothers to achieve self-care throughout their busy day. Practicing minfulness, meditation and breath work in high stress situations are a few ways to cope with mom burnout.
Get outside as much as you can throughout the day and find peaceful ways to wind down at night. Avoid social media as much as possible in your free time and instead opt for a positive podcast or book.

The Power of Boundaries
It is important to establish healthy boundaries in all aspects of your life. Between external demands and your own expectations, try fostering a sense of balance and control.
Set small and realistic goals for each day. Don’t beat yourself up if something doesn’t get done and just move it to the next days list.
The dishes and laundry can wait and the priority right now is your sanity.

Seeking Support
Seeking support from friends, family, and even profesionals is an amazing way to lean on your support system
Remember, asking for help when you need it is a sign of strength, not weakness!
Embrace Imperfections in Motherhood
There is no such thing as perfection, but especially during the journey of motherhood.
Embrace imperfections, and when appropriate, laugh at them! It’s okay, and even normal, to not have it all together all the time.
