The crisp autumn air, the pumpkin spice lattes, and the excitement that comes with Halloween festivities can fill the season with excitement and joy. However, for many, this festive time can also bring forth unexpected challenges and stressors that can cause a rift between Halloween and mental health.

Now that we are adults, and even more, parents, the upcoming holiday season comes with so much more responsibility than just having to worry about ourselves.
Don’t even get me started on the expectation of yearly fall photoshoots and what that does to my stress levels. (I am currently searching for photoshoot outfits for the family as we speak).

Halloween often marks the beginning of the holiday season, which can be a mixed bag of emotions.
The pressure to plan costumes, parties, and decorations can contribute to stress and anxiety. Acknowledging these seasonal stressors is the first step in managing them effectively.
Recognizing Halloween-Related Stressors
Costume Anxiety: The quest for the perfect costume can be daunting. Whether you’re preparing for a party or accompanying your children trick-or-treating, the pressure to dress up can be anxiety-inducing. Is it me or does the expectation to find or make the perfect costume get higher each year?
Social Expectations: Halloween parties and gatherings can feel obligatory, leading to social anxiety and feelings of isolation. This season as a whole comes with many social expectations that can be emotionally draining.
Financial Concerns: The costs associated with costumes, decorations, and treats can put a strain on your budget, causing financial stress.
Safety Worries: This is the biggest stress for me since becoming a parent. For parents, ensuring the safety of their children during trick-or-treating, and after, can add to the seasonal stress. Nowadays, safety concerns even extend to the safety of our pets, homes and cars.

Self-Awareness and Self-Care
Taking care of your mental health during Halloween involves self-awareness and self-compassion. Below is a list of ways to navigate the spooky season with your well-being in mind
Set Realistic Expectations: Instead of striving to keep up with The Jones’, set small and attainable goals and boundaries for Halloween activities. For example, maybe put a cap on how many pumpkin patches you will visit this year, my cap is 3. Remember that it’s okay to scale back when needed!
Time Management: Plan ahead to avoid last-minute rushes. I love lists! Make to-do lists, allocate specific time for Halloween preparations and add it into your calendar (ideally in an area where your husband can see it too. lol.)
Social Boundaries: Don’t feel obligated to attend every Halloween event! This holiday season I urge you to prioritize your well-being. Decide as a family which gatherings are genuinely enjoyable and beneficial for you all.
Limit Social Media: Excessive exposure to Halloween-related content on social media can contribute to feelings of inadequacy or comparison. And this even goes for most other times of the year, but I digress.
Set boundaries and consider a temporary break from platforms if needed. Take the time you would normally use for social media, and use that energy towards reading. I have been into self-improvement reading lately but it might be fun to pick up a murder mystery during this spooky season.
Engaging in Enjoyable Activities: Pursue hobbies and activities that bring you joy and relaxation, even if they’re unrelated to Halloween. Remember, nothing has to change just because it’s the Halloween season. Continue enjoying the things you love to do! Focusing on your interests can provide a healthy distraction.
