The weather is cooling down, it’s getting dark and gloomy outside, and we are nearing the end of another year. Fall reflection invites us to contemplate the changes within ourselves as nature undergoes its transformative beauty.
This is the time people start saying things like “I can’t believe Michaels already has their Christmas stuff out” or “Wow that year just flew by didn’t it”?

You start reflecting on the past year and wonder if you have much to show for it. This is typically around the time that I let go of most of the healthy eating habits and workout schedule I set in motion months ago. Well, because there is this party and that event and it just makes so much more sense to start fresh next year, right?
I start feeling bad that I didn’t reach the goals I set out originally. I also compare my success, or lack thereof, to others’. That’s a big NO NO.
But not this year! With you as my witness, things will be different and I urge you to do the same as we set goals and intentions for the fall season.
Embracing the Season of Change
The fall season is a beautiful and transformative time of change. The leaves start to change colors before they make their short descent to the ground. Perhaps upon their departure from the tree, they imagine transforming into a new and different color next year, or holding on to their branch just a bit longer.
Fall is a perfect time to reflect on all of the things you want to let go of. All of the negativity that you have been holding onto, waiting for the new year to start. It is ok to set aside some introspective time to think on what has gone wrong so far or what has been holding you back, but now it is time to let it go. Like the leaf from the tree.

Symbolically and literally, fall is an ideal time to do some self-reflection while embracing and welcoming change. Below are some reasons why you should consider fall reflection and goal setting earlier than usual this year.
Benefits of Setting Fall Intentions and Goals:
1. Clarity and Focus:
- Setting intentions and goals help you gain clarity about what you want to achieve during the fall season. It directs your focus toward specific areas of your life.
2. Motivation:
- Having clear intentions and goals provides motivation. When you know what you’re working towards, you’re more likely to stay committed and take action. I ALWAYS recommend writing it down for an extra burst of motivation!
3. Personal Growth:
- Fall intentions and goals can be a tool for personal growth. They encourage you to step out of your comfort zone, learn new things, and challenge yourself.
4. Time Management:
- Setting goals helps you prioritize tasks and manage your time effectively. It prevents procrastination and ensures that you allocate your resources wisely.
5. Improved Well-Being:
- Fall intentions can include self-care and wellness goals. By prioritizing your well-being, you’ll likely experience improved mental and physical health.
6. Enhanced Self-Esteem:
- Achieving your goals can boost your self-esteem and confidence. It provides a sense of accomplishment and reinforces your belief in your abilities.
7. Better Decision-Making:
- Goals serve as a framework for making decisions. When you have a clear sense of what you want, it’s easier to make choices aligned with your objectives.
Reflecting on the Past Seasons
Before you think about setting goals and intentions for the season, it is vital to use this time to reflect on your experiences and accomplishments during the preceding seasons of the year.
This means taking the time to highlight your successes as well as contemplating areas of improvement.
For example: Starting this blog was a huge accomplishment for me this year, but I have struggled a bit with consistency, so that is something I plan on improving on in the next few months!
Identifying Personal Values and Priorities
The next step in setting goals and intentions for the fall season is to identify your core values and priorities. This will help you align your goals with what truly matters to you.
Think about moments in your life when you felt proud, fulfilled, or deeply satisfied. Consider times when you were at your happiest or when you felt most true to yourself. What were you doing, and what values or principles were at play during those moments?
And then, ask yourself deep and introspective questions. For example:
- What matters most to me in life?
- What principles do I want to guide my decisions and actions?
- What am I willing to stand up for or defend, even if it’s challenging?
- What do I want to be remembered for?

SMART Goals for Autumn:
- The acronym SMART stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. When you structure your goals according to these criteria, you increase your chances of success and make it easier to track your progress!

Breaking down larger goals, to smaller more actionable and realistic goals for the season will allow you to practice consistency and in turn reach those goals without overwhelming yourself.
Setting intentions and goals in the next few months holds you accountable for your actions. You’re more likely to follow through on commitments when you’ve documented them. There is nothing worse than looking at a list of things you intended to do, and throwing it in the trash.
Fall reflection and goal setting encourages a forward-thinking mindset. It helps you focus on the future and what you can do to shape it in a positive way.
Don’t use this season of celebration as an excuse to start next year, Start now!
