There is one part of my self-care regimen at home that I will never cut corners on, no matter how busy or distracted I get. That one thing is my lip scrub and exfoliation routine.
Messy buns, yoga pants, and house slippers are fine. But nobody likes a crusty, dusty, lipped mama. Was that too harsh or can I get an amen?!

Homemade lip scrub is a simple and effective way to keep your lips soft, smooth, and free of dry, flaky skin. Exfoliating your lips regularly can also help your lip products, like lipstick or lip balm, go on more smoothly. Here’s a DIY lip exfoliator recipe that you can easily make at home:
What You Will Need:
- Honey: Honey is a natural humectant that helps retain moisture and has antibacterial properties. Plus it smells so yummy and sweet!
- Brown Sugar: Brown sugar is an excellent natural exfoliant, gentler on the skin than some other options. Regular sugar, or salt can be used as a replacement if needed.
- Olive Oil or Coconut Oil: Either of these oils can be used to add moisture and create a paste-like consistency for your exfoliator. I prefer coconut, but you can use either one.
Lip Scrub Instructions:
- Gather Your Ingredients: You’ll need a small bowl, a tablespoon of honey, a tablespoon of brown sugar, and a tablespoon of either olive oil or coconut oil.
- Mix the Ingredients: In the small bowl, combine the honey, brown sugar, and your chosen oil (olive or coconut). Mix them together until you have a thick, grainy paste. You can adjust the ratios slightly to achieve your desired consistency.
- Apply the Exfoliator: With clean fingers or a lip brush, apply a small amount of the homemade lip exfoliator to your lips.
- Gently Exfoliate: Use gentle, circular motions to rub the mixture onto your lips. Be careful not to be too harsh, as the skin on your lips is delicate. Continue exfoliating for about 1-2 minutes.
- Let It Sit: Allow the mixture to sit on your lips for an additional 1-2 minutes. This will give the ingredients more time to penetrate and hydrate your lips.
- Rinse Off: After the waiting time, rinse off the exfoliator with lukewarm water. You can use a damp cloth or your fingers to gently wipe away the mixture.
- Apply Lip Balm: To lock in moisture, apply a hydrating lip balm immediately after exfoliating. Your lips will feel incredibly soft and smooth.
- Repeat as Needed: You can use this DIY lip exfoliator a few times a week, depending on the condition of your lips. Adjust the frequency to suit your needs.
I love using this lip exfoliator as part of my self-care routine and especially during my self-care showers. I like to keep a small jar inside of my shower and exfoliate while I am conditioning and if you are a mom you know, multitasking.
Sometimes I even quadruple the recipe and make my besties some scrub or add it as part of a cute little gift. I also enjoy pairing my DIY lip scrub with a lip brush to really get those crusties gone.
Lip Tips:
- If you want to add a pleasant scent, consider incorporating a drop of your favorite essential oil (such as lavender, vanilla, or peppermint) into the mixture.
- Store any leftover lip exfoliator in an airtight container or a small jar for future use.
- Be cautious not to over-exfoliate your lips, as this can lead to irritation. Once or twice a week is usually sufficient for most people.
Lastly, I top my freshly exfoliated and kissable lips with my favorite lip mask before I lay in bed. I swear, it never fails, my husband always comments on how soft my lips are after all of these steps are followed. Recently, I have even put a jar of scrub in his shower and he has actually been using it too!
This DIY homemade lip exfoliator is an excellent way to maintain soft, kissable lips without the need for expensive products. Plus, it’s made from natural ingredients, making it a safer and more eco-friendly option.
I’d love to hear in the comments if you have tried this DIY lip scrub recipe, or if you have a different recipe you prefer. I’d also be remiss if I didn’t mention my favorite pre-made lip scrub that I purchase when I am out of ingredients at home.
