DIY Face Masks are healthy for your skin, AFFORDABLE, and fun for the whole family!
I’m convinced that motherhood is one big science experiment. You basically keep DIY-ing on your child until something works. I really hope I’m not just speaking for myself here…
That said, becoming a mom has allowed me to relax a bit and even try some new things on myself. Sure, before when I had all the time and funds in the world to have other people shape my eyebrows, slap a spray tan on me, and pamper me with a facial, it seemed really convenient. Now that time is few and far between and funds are a distant memory, there has been something satisfying about finding ways to pamper myself with DIY projects at home.

DIY Face Mask Fun
There’s also something inherently satisfying about pampering your skin with natural, homemade and cost-effective remedies. DIY face masks offer a delightful way to nourish and revitalize your skin without the need for expensive spa treatments or commercial products that are filled with toxins.
Whether you’re dealing with dryness, acne, or just looking for a healthy glow, crafting your own face masks can be a fun and cost-effective solution. In this blog post, I will introduce you to the world of DIY face masks, including some easy-to-make recipes and their benefits!
You Have The Ingredients Already!
Remember earlier in the week when your toddler begged and kicked and screamed for those avocados at the grocery store, and you kindly reminded her how she hates avocados and anything remotely close to them? She somehow convinces you to let her try them once again and she joyfully skips to the car with the bag of organic avocados (because only the best for your sweet princess of course).
Needless to say, those very avocados are starting to wrinkle and you personally can only eat so much avocado toast. There’s nothing more I hate than throwing away leftover food (currently having a flashback of me sitting at the dinner table as a child hearing my mom say how there are starving children that would be grateful for this meatloaf).
Well, this has been my long-winded way of saying, let me fill you in on how I have been using these everyday items I typically have around the home, in my self-care routine.

Know What’s Going On Your Skin
I have become obsessed with making my face masks at home lately. Not only is it cost-effective and easy, but it is very important to me to know what it is exactly that I am putting on my skin. I have noticed a major glow since I ditched the pre-made sheet masks I used to use from beauty stores, and started making my own.
Before You Begin: Always conduct a patch test to ensure you aren’t allergic or sensitive to any of the ingredients in your chosen face mask. Additionally, remember that individual skin types may react differently to various ingredients, so it’s important to customize these recipes to your specific needs. And also you can’t sue me, I don’t have any money remember?
Basic Ingredients for DIY Face Masks:
- Honey: A natural humectant that locks in moisture and has antibacterial properties.
- Yogurt: Rich in probiotics and lactic acid, which gently exfoliates and hydrates the skin.
- Oatmeal: Provides a gentle exfoliation and soothes sensitive skin.
- Avocado: Loaded with healthy fats and vitamins that moisturize and nourish the skin.
- Banana: Rich in vitamins and antioxidants, promoting youthful-looking skin.
- Turmeric: Known for its anti-inflammatory and brightening properties.
- Clay: Absorbs excess oil and impurities, making it ideal for oily or acne-prone skin.
- Aloe Vera Gel: Soothes and hydrates, particularly for sensitive or sunburned skin.
DIY Face Mask Recipes:

- Mash the avocado and mix in honey until it forms a smooth paste. Apply to your face for 15-20 minutes and rinse with warm water. This mask deeply hydrates and leaves your skin feeling soft and supple.
- Perfect choice for the upcoming Winter season!
- Soothing Oatmeal and Yogurt Mask
- Ingredients: 2 tablespoons plain yogurt, 1 tablespoon oatmeal
- Mix the yogurt and oatmeal together to create a thick paste. Apply and leave on for 15 minutes, then rinse. This mask is perfect for calming irritated or sensitive skin.
- Banana and Honey Brightening Mask
- Ingredients: 1 ripe banana, 1 tablespoon honey
- Mash the banana and mix in honey. Apply the mixture for 15-20 minutes and rinse off. This mask helps improve your complexion and gives your skin a radiant glow.
- Be careful, toddlers may try and lick your face!
- Turmeric and Aloe Vera Detox Mask
- Ingredients: 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder, 1 tablespoon aloe vera gel
- Combine the ingredients to make a paste. Apply it to your face for 10-15 minutes, then rinse thoroughly. This mask detoxifies and brightens the skin.
- This one is probably my favorite one on the list! I love the cooling and glowing effects after using this mask.
- Clay Mask for Oily Skin
- Ingredients: 2 tablespoons clay (e.g., bentonite or kaolin), water or rosewater
- Please note it is normal to feel your skin becoming very tight and you may even feel pulsating (I always imagine the pulsating pulling all the gunk out of my pores)
- Mix the clay with enough liquid to create a paste. Apply the mask, let it dry for 10-15 minutes, and rinse with warm water. It helps absorb excess oil and tightens pores.
DIY Face Masks Made Simple
I also wanted to share in the post something that my husband recently purchased for my birthday. He has seen the crazy concoctions I have been coming up with lately and is always willing to support the habits that save him money in the long run. I am obsessed with this facial mask maker he surprised me with! You can basically pour any type of liquid (fruit, vegetable, collagen etc.) into the machine and it will thicken it into a mask. How cool is that?!
DIY face masks offer a natural and cost-effective (I know, my fav word) way to care for your skin. By using ingredients readily available in your kitchen, you can create customized treatments tailored to your skin’s needs.
Incorporate these masks into your skincare routine for a revitalized and radiant complexion. You can even make it an experience for all of the family to enjoy ๐ Remember to patch-test, stay consistent, and enjoy the soothing, rejuvenating experience of DIY skincare. Your skin will thank you for the extra care and attention.
And as usual, please let me know in the comments if you try one of these recipes of if you have some favorites of your own!
