Why Laser Hair Removal?
I still remember back in sixth grade when girls began shaving their legs. My mom said I was too young and had to wait until high school. I was so hairy and so embarrassed that I would often wear jeans and long sleeves in the middle of summer. Finally, my mom gave in to my insecurities and let me bleach my body hair. Guess what happens when you bleach body hair? You are still hairy, and it’s just blonde. And then when it grows out? Oof.
Needless to say, I have been a hairy girl for as long as I can remember. For some girls, it doesn’t bother them, and I salute you. For me, it has always been a big insecurity of mine.
In 2021, I finally bit the bullet and opened up a credit card just to “afford” in-office laser hair removal. It was going to be about $3,000 to get every inch of my body zapped, and I was here for it. But then I found out I was pregnant, and I have pretty much been pregnant ever since.
I am finally done having babies (laser hair removal is not pregnancy-safe), and have spent the last 6 months or so searching high and low for the best at-home laser hair removal device.
Why at home, you ask? Well, I’m a mom, and the in-office laser regimen can be strict and frequent.
What Is Laser Hair Removal?
Laser hair removal is a procedure that uses a concentrated beam of light to remove hair in unwanted areas.
The laser emits a light that is absorbed by the pigment in the hair. The light energy is converted to heat, which damages the tube-shaped sacs within the skin (hair follicles) that produce hairs. This damage inhibits or delays future hair growth.
Laser hair removal is most effective for people who have light skin and dark hair, but it can be successfully used on all skin types.
How Much Does In-Office Laser Hair Removal Cost?
The answer to this varies based on several factors. The location of the practice, how many areas, and how many areas to be treated all affect the price.
According to a recent review from Forbes Health, “If you are getting laser hair removal on large areas of your body, such as your back or legs, the cost will likely be more expensive than removing hair from small areas. Generally, a large area like the back or legs can be upwards of $600 per treatment.”
Typically, it is recommended to have 4-6 treatments in each area. As you can see how time-consuming and expensive this in-office procedure can be.
My Experience Using An At Home Hair Removal Device
I came across the Braun IPL Silk Expert Pro 5 while doing extensive research into the “Best Home Laser Hair Removal Devices.”
Toni from Amazon posted: “I’m mad that I didn’t get something like this 10 years ago! I have been using it for about 9-10 weeks and my underarms are 100% hair free and my legs are 98% hair free.”
Hair-free, she said??! SOLD to the broke hairy mom selling her old Lululemon on Mercari to afford this! But FYI, I spent hours reading reviews and doing comparison research before I took the leap and made the big purchase.
At the time of this posting the Braun IPL device sells for $344. Yes, it is a lot of money to shell out at first but it is so worth it. Let me tell you and show you why I give the Braun IPL Device a MOMest 9 out of 10.

You guys, here is a picture of my armpit 8 weeks after starting the use of the Braun SilkExpert Pro 5. I hadn’t shaved in about two weeks when this pic was taken. Can you believe it?? I’m finally the naked mole rat I’ve always dreamt I could be.
Now I will answer some most commonly asked questions.
How Long Does the Whole Process Take?
Seeing as how I zap my entire body from head-to-toe, The process takes about 10 minutes once a week.
Per the instructions: In the first phase of your treatment, treat once a week for 4 – 12 weeks. During this time you’ll see your hair grow thinner and less. Once you start to see desired results, adjust to your needs (i.e. every 1-2 months).
Is Laser Hair Removal Painful?
Not at all! I love that the Braun SilkExpert Pro 5 has different modes for sensitivity.
Most people explain laser hair removal to be equivalent to the snap of a rubber band. This is definitely not that intense. The only areas that are a bit more sensitive are the intimate areas which I typically use the most gentle setting on.
Does it Actually Work?
Yes! If you have decided to continue reading on after my disgusting pictures than you know the proof is in the pictures!
I started noticing my body hair growing in thinner after about 3 weeks and then at 4 weeks I got to a point where I didn’t have to shave every other day. My legs are taking a little bit longer to catch up but that’s where my most coarse and stubborn hair resides. I will update with leg pictures soon!
Is it Safe?
Yes! The Braun IPL device has been clinically tested and proven safe for at-home use. Also, the updated skin sensor automatically adapts to your skin tone, creating a perfect balance between fast results and gentleness on the skin.
Of course, if you have questions you can always consult with your physician.
How Long Will The Device Last?
Per the website description, The Braun IPL device is good for up to 400,000 flashes. This is equivalent to 22 years of full body treatments!
Please consider this fact when contemplating this large purchase as it is what swayed me in the direction to buy it. Talk about cost-effectiveness!
