Motherhood is a transformative journey filled with love, joy, and tears. Lots and lots of tears. Perhaps more coming from you than your new bundle of joy (and trust me, this is very normal).
Amidst the joys of new parenthood, many mothers may find themselves grappling with a shift in their identity. Your whole world has been flipped upside down in a matter of a day, with no instruction manual included.

At times, it is difficult to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Meanwhile, you are in mourning for what your life used to be. Will you ever get your old life back? You wonder.
To be completely honest the answer is no. But that’s ok. This new journey you are on is about to transform you into someone you never knew you could be, in the most amazing way. You will become stronger, more resilient, and more confident than you ever imagined you could be. Please trust the process, and try to enjoy the small moments along the way.
As a mother, it’s natural to prioritize the needs of your children and family. Sometimes, to the extent of forgetting your own dreams, passions, and individuality.
However, it is essential to not lose sight of who you are. In fact, motherhood can be an opportunity for rediscovery and personal growth. In this blog post, I will help you explore strategies and tips to navigate motherhood while also reestablishing and nurturing your identity.
Embrace Self-Care
Self-care is vital in maintaining a sense of self and well-being. Make time for activities that bring you joy, such as reading, exercising, pursuing hobbies, or simply taking a peaceful walk.
This might also be a great time to re-discover things that you enjoy. Take up jogging, knitting, or yoga. I always used to hate the question, “What do you do for fun?” or “What do you do in your free time?” What do you mean fun or free time?? I am a mother!
I didn’t see at first there there was an importance for anything else. Prioritizing self-care allows you to replenish your energy and reconnect with your passions, helping you rediscover your identity.

Set Goals and Prioritize
While motherhood takes up a significant portion of your time and energy, it’s crucial to set personal goals and prioritize them alongside your responsibilities as a mother.
Take some time to identify your values, aspirations, and dreams, and then break them down into actionable steps. Write them down! Your values and goals have undoubtedly changed since becoming a mom. By setting goals and working towards them, you are actively building and shaping your identity.
Seek Support in Motherhood
Motherhood can be an isolating experience, but I promise you are not alone. Reach out to other moms or support groups in your community or online.
Sharing your journey, experiences, and challenges with like-minded individuals can provide valuable insights, encouragement, and a sense of belonging.
Those invasive thoughts? We all have them. The everyday struggles of trying to juggle it all, are normal too. Get around a group that can be honest and tell you they have hard days and can lift you up when you are having a hard one. It takes a village, remember.
Support systems can help you maintain your own identity while embracing the transformative role of motherhood.
Nurture Relationships
While you navigate the challenges and joys of motherhood, don’t forget the importance of nurturing relationships.
Schedule regular date nights, socialize with friends, and spend quality time with your partner. This step is so vital, even though it seems like it is at the bottom of the priority list right now. It has been so helpful to sit down with my husband each week to go over the weekly plans and get on the same page. We recently decided we can each pick one night a week to have “alone time” which can be used for whatever we need it for and it’s been life-changing.
Your relationships contribute to your overall well-being and help you maintain a sense of self outside of motherhood.
Discover New Passions and Interests
Motherhood presents an opportunity to explore new passions and interests. Use this time to discover activities or hobbies that you’ve always wanted to pursue.
Remember when our parents used to say “You can be whoever you want to be!” It’s true, and you still have time mama.
Take a deep dive and learn more about yourself, and things that matter to you. That is exactly how this blog was born!
Whether it’s learning a new language, taking up a creative pursuit, or volunteering for a cause you care about, these experiences contribute to your growth and allow you to expand your identity beyond being a mother.
Embrace Flexibility
Motherhood requires adaptability and flexibility. This has been an extremely tough area of focus for me, your friendly type-A and OCD blogger.
When you are a kid you think adults have it all figured out. That couldn’t be further from the truth now that I am one. Adulthood, and especially parenthood, will be a continuous journey of making mistakes and hopefully learning from them.
Embrace the fact that your identity may evolve as you navigate different stages of motherhood. Be open to redefining your goals, values, and interests. Embracing flexibility allows you to grow and adapt to the challenges and joys that come with motherhood.
Final Thoughts on Motherhood
Motherhood is a transformative journey that can sometimes overshadow our sense of self. However, by prioritizing self-care, setting goals, seeking support, nurturing relationships, exploring new passions, and embracing flexibility, we can navigate motherhood while simultaneously rediscovering our identity.
Give yourself grace, none of this stuff is going to happen overnight, it’s not supposed to!
Remember, being a mother does not mean sacrificing your own dreams and desires. Embrace the new you, because by nourishing your identity, you become a stronger, happier, and more fulfilled mother, partner, friend and person!
